What is it: 16-track digital audio multitracker
What we think: For enthusiasts or professionals, the AW1600 is a complete home-recording, mixing and mastering package. Considering the price and features, it's hard to fault this nippy device

We like:
Solid design; intuitive interface; compression can be applied to any input; mastering finished song is neatly implemented through internal CD-R drive
We don't like:
Controls have some lateral travel which keeps the unit prosumer rather than pro; manual could have been more friendly
You might also need:
Microphones, instruments, patch cables and even a few musicians
CNET.co.uk judgement:
If you're looking to get your hands on the kind of equipment that used to be the sole preserve of studios like Abbey Road, this is it. There's none of the complication of a computer-based system. The solid-state circuits in the AW1600 are impossible to crash and the audio quality is nothing short of orgasmic
