What is it: MP3 and video player with 60GB hard drive
What we think: Buy the affordable, sleek fifth-gen iPod for its audio virtues -- poor battery life and a relatively small screen hamper its appeal to video enthusiasts

We like:
Incredibly thin and intuitive design; beautiful LCD; supports photo and video playback; seamless integration with iTunes, which boasts the world's biggest music catalogue and a new video store; smooth video; lots of extra features, such as a world clock, a stopwatch and PIM applications; a galaxy of accessories designed for the iPod; great overall value
We don't like:
No extras included, such as a dock, AV cables or a power adaptor; poor battery life for video; slight delay when playing video; no guarantee that your non-iTunes Music Store video will play on an iPod, even after using converted third-party software; TV programmes not available on iTunes outside of the US yet
CNET UK judgement:
Buy the affordable, sleek and sexy fifth-generation Apple iPod for its audio virtues. Although video looks great, poor video battery life and a relatively small screen hamper its appeal to video enthusiasts

Which new iPod is the one for me?
So, you've decided you must have an iPod. Your options are thankfully straightforward -- Apple has anticipated the average consumer's aversion to obscure letters and numbers and simply calls its ranges the iPod, the iPod nano and the iPod Shuffle.
