Typical price: £130
What is it: 3GB Micro hard drive MP3 player
What we think: It has only 3GB, but the funky Archos Gmini XS 100 is the WMA -- and cheaper -- alternative to the iPod Mini

We like:
Small and light; nice design; intuitive controls; drag-and-drop or sync music transfers; plays DRM-protected WMA and subscription-based (Janus) files; on-the-fly playlists
We don't like:
AC adaptor not included; no hold slider; no FM tuner; no voice or line-in recording; volume could go higher
You might also need:
AC adaptor; better earbuds; armband
CNET UK judgement:
If you're looking for a small MP3 player with a stylish and ergonomic design -- and you don't need a tonne of storage -- consider Archos's Gmini XS 100
Full review:
Watch your back, iPod Mini -- the Gmini XS 100 is nipping at your heels. Archos's new svelte, eye-catching music player is like a smaller, lighter version of Apple's colourful and popular portable. While the 3GB Gmini XS 100 (£130) doesn't come packed with extras such as an FM tuner and line-in or voice recording, it boasts an intuitive interface, great music-management features, compatibility with subscription-based music and excellent sound quality. Music lovers looking for an alternative to the iPod Mini should give the XS 100 a serious listen. Continue Reading...
