The 12-megapixel Optio P70 boasts an exemplary ultra-compact design, has great features and offers relatively good pictures for the target audience -- those who want to step up from taking snaps with their phone. We wish it was speedier though, and its low-light shots aren't great

The Kodak EasyShare V1253 is one of the slimmer and simpler 12-megapixel compacts on the market. It has the ability to shoot 720p HD movies, and while it lacks optical image stabilisation, it has 23 scene modes that produce well-saturated colours and pleasing pictures for most snapshooters

Slap bang in the middle of Kodak's M range of simple point-and-shoot digital cameras, the M853 is a steal for under £80. Eminently pocketable and available in a wide range of colours, it does lack many advanced features, but its user-friendliness may make up for that
