Casio Exilim EX-FC100

Particularly suited to action photography, the 9-megapixel Exilim EX-FC100 offers continuous shooting speeds that are out of this world, as well as plenty of other hi-tech tricks. It also takes good photos, which makes up for the fact that it's not the most beautiful camera in the world

Other ruggedised compact cameras might be tougher, but the 12-megapixel Lumix DMC-FT1 is very well specified for its class, with a 4.6x wideangle zoom and hi-def movie mode, making it a great all-rounder. If versatility is more important to you than having the hardest camera available, it'll be worth a gander

Olympus SP-590 UZ

As superzooms go, the SP-590 UZ, with a 26x wideangle zoom, offers one of the best combinations of price, features, performance and picture quality that we've seen so far. It won't replace a digital SLR but, if you're looking for an ultimate do-it-all compact, the SP-590's definitely worth a look

Ricoh CX1

The 9-megapixel CX1 looks smart, produces good-quality images and offers plenty of features to get your teeth into. Its high-dynamic-range mode isn't perfect, but the CX1 offers excellent 4 frames per second full-resolution shooting, and its high-resolution LCD screen is great too

Sony Alpha DSLR-A300

While most dSLRs use CMOS sensors in order to provide live view, Sony's DSLR-A300 doesn't: It offers instant live view via a tilting LCD screen. Now that's pretty cool. Another bonus is that Sony's built-in Super SteadyShot anti-shake system works with any compatible lens, allowing you to produce vibrant, clear shots, no matter what the circumstances
