Samsung PL60

The 10.2-megapixel PL60 may be inexpensive, but it's also stylish, practical and satisfying to use. You'll get good pictures whether or not you use the hi-tech shooting functions on offer, and the PL60 is capable of picking out more detail than many 12-megapixel snappers. It's a good buy at this price

Its pictures are fairly ordinary, but the 12.2-megapixel ST550 is a stunningly successful exercise in interface design. With a front-mounted touchscreen that makes taking self-portraits a piece of cake, a rear-mounted touchscreen that delivers haptic feedback, and a motion-sensitive menu system, it's a joy to use

The 12-megapixel WB1000 offers more control over your photos than the vast majority of other compact cameras, making it a good option for digital SLR users seeking a pocket snapper. Its photo quality and performance are what you'd expect from a compact, but it's a beautifully made machine

The NV9 is a very tempting 10-megapixel super-slim camera. It offers far more than you'd expect for its £120 price, including an attractively finished and robust metal body, a 5x zoom, a built-in MP3 player and surprisingly good picture quality. It's not perfect but, for the price, it's pretty close

The i85 is the result: a stylish 8-megapixel compact with a 5x zoom and enough features to keep you entertained on the plane and informed when you get to where you're going

It looks terrific, with its 76mm screen taking up the whole back, and -- crucially -- is available in a range of pretty colours
