Hello, I'm Richard Trenholm of CNET.co.uk, and this is the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd. It's the top-end camera in Fujifilm 's compact FinePix range, boasting 12 megapixels and a 5x zoom.
It has a less chunky design than its predecessors, with these subtle curves making it look like its breathing in. It's still quite heavy though.
As well as this black version, you can also get it in silver.
At the back, there's a 2.7-inch screen. That's a pretty good size, but somehow it doesn't feel very big, simply because there's so much space on the back. Fuji has trimmed all the fat off these slimline buttons, and also turned the circular clickpad into a scroll wheel.
I love scroll wheels. This one is big enough and grippy enough to be really comfortable to use. It's especially good when combined with the onscreen mode wheel, when the physical interface is perfectly complemented by the graphical interface.
I'd really like to use the nippy scroll wheel to change settings as well as just skipping through menus. Unfortunately there just aren't any manual controls on the F100 to adjust - You don't even get aperture or shutter priority.
But, it's not meant for complex photography -- it's a point-and-shoot in the truest sense. It does have an excellent 28mm wide angle lens, with a 5x zoom for head-and-shoulder portraits. You also get features like optical image stabilisation and face detection 3.0. Face detection 3.0 is designed to deal with faces in profile or partially obscured. It's not perfect, but it's definitely one of the best face-chasing systems going.
So this is a clever camera, if not a particularly complex one. I'm Richard Trenholm of CNET.co.uk, and this is the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd.
We want to like the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd and we certainly like its scroll wheel, big screen and 5x zoom. But even respectable image quality isn't enough to overcome the undistinguished feature set and inexplicably fiddly controls
