Typical price: £150
What is it: Handbag-friendly 12-megapixel ultracompact with face detection
What we think: Slightly overpowered but supremely easy-to-use style camera packed with friendly features

We like:
Small but solid; effortless menus and buttons; natural pictures
We don't like:
Minor build issues; erratic focus; soft on detail
CNET UK judgement:
The smart Pentax Optio S12 looks and feels as classy and assured as any of the Pentax S series from recent years. The venerable chassis, though, doesn't really suit such a high-resolution sensor -- the previous 10-megapixel S10 gives just as much usable detail and will save you a good £50

Good camera, but it's underspecified and overpriced, even compared to other IXUS models

Its lens and image quality aren't great, but it's a good option for beginner photographers
