Typical price: £530
What is it: Oddly shaped but solidly constructed 8-megapixel dSLR
What we think: A sturdy, high-res consumer dSLR that's strong on performance

We like:
High resolution for its price; effective dust elimination; speedy, pleasing performance; unusually solid construction for its class; top-notch images when properly exposed at low to moderate ISO sensitivities
We don't like:
Inconsistent, too-often inaccurate metering; short battery life; only one command dial; somewhat noisier images than competitors at ISO 800 and ISO 1,600
You might also need:
A CompactFlash Type I or II card or MicroDrive with a capacity of at least 256MB
CNET UK judgement:
This beauty-challenged Olympus offers unmatched build quality, snappy performance, and top resolution for its class, but low-light shooters and metering novices may prefer alternatives
