Sigma DP2 review

In this review

The Foveon sensor isn't as good at high ISOs as other sensor types. It beats the tiny sensors in compact cameras, but conventional dSLRs show it a clean pair of heels at ISO 800 and beyond.

The Foveon X3 sensor resolves detail clearly right down to individual pixels, which is why some of the test bars are showing interference patterns. Otherwise, the real-world resolution's on a par with 10- to 12-megapixel dSLRs (click image to enlarge)

Finally, there's a movie mode, but the resolution's a miserable 320x212 pixels, so it hardly counts.

Conclusion
The Sigma DP2 is an expensive, specialised camera that demands a good level of photographic knowledge. Old-school photographers will love its simplicity and the degree of hands-on control it provides, but technology junkies will wonder what the fuss is about. Most importantly, though, the image quality, if you can get megapixels out of your head, is excellent.
