Comment: While I have always admired CNET for its reviews, what I cannot understand is the divergent treatment given to the Canon IXUS 510 and IXUS 500. Both are essentially the same cameras, with the same looks, same optics, same processor and same software. There are only a a few differences between them (touch screen and wifi for the 510). But while CNET review heaps praises on the IXUS 510, it is not as favourable towards the IXUS 500.
This is what CNET had to sum up regarding the IXUS 500/ELPH 520:
The good: The Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS is a good-looking camera that's remarkably compact for its 12x zoom lens.
The bad: The 520 HS' button layout takes some adjusting to, its battery life is relatively short, and its photo and movie quality are disappointing given the camera's price tag.
The bottom line: The Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS is a good choice for those already happy with their smartphone's photos and movie clips, but looking for a cute little camera with a long zoom and faster performance.
The Canon PowerShot Elph 520 HS is a good choice for those already happy with their smartphone's photos and movie clips, but looking for a cute, little camera with a long zoom and faster performance. If you're after significantly better results, though, you'll need to go with a slightly larger camera, like Canon's PowerShot Elph 510 HS.
And this is what CNET had to sum up regarding the IXUS 510:
A return to form for the IXUS line, the Canon IXUS 510 HS is one of the best-looking cameras you can buy, and if you do, you won't be disappointed with its output. Vivid colours, fine detail and a good zoom make this camera a great choice.
The IXUS 510 HS is a great little camera. It's pleasing to see it returning to its roots as a stylish, chunky little block of a snapper. It's even better to have so many features built in, with a long zoom, fair resolution and excellent smart phone integration.
Where it really matters -- image quality -- it puts in a very good showing to provide the best of all worlds: good looks, great features and first-class performance.
Read the two reviews in detail and you will know what I mean.
Why, CNET, why?
Good: Small size, fantastic screen, loads and loads of options
Bad: Nothing so far
Comment: I read the review, saw why it had lost half a star (price) but when I saw that PC World had it on offer for £129.00 it was a no brainer. Now it's 5 stars from me!
