Which has the best overall image in daylight and lowlight, the canon ixus 255 or canon sx280. Thanks in advance.
Good: The best night-time photos I've ever taken on an automated setting
Comment: We only use the automated features of a camera and I found it difficult to find reviews which weren't written by experts - so hope this will be of some use. Getting photos in low-level light is always a challenge with point-and-shoot cameras, so I’ll focus on this here.
We took pictures on both standard Auto and an automated function called Night Scene Mode, and the difference is remarkable. The night mode is easily selected from the function menu on the LCD screen - no faffing around with any manual settings require. You then press the shutter and hold the camera still for a couple of seconds whilst it flashes once but takes 4-5 pictures. It then takes about 5 seconds to somehow piece these together into one amazing photo.
As an example, taking a portrait shot in a dark restaurant: The portrait aspect is clear and warm but the background is also crisp and equally light. I can't explain this in technical terms, but trust me it looks fantastic. In contrast, the standard Auto mode just makes the person look extremely bright and washed out and the background is non-existent.
The only time this night mode doesn't seem to work is in very low light, e.g. taking a shot of an outdoor swimming pool/building with next to no light. But we did manage to get extremely clear city-scape photos from 52 floors up at night without any blurring.
The Vivid mode is also great for really bringing out blues and greens, making sea/beach scenes really pop without looking too enhanced (note this doesn't work well with red/orange tones).
Finally, the HD video quality and sound is stunning for such a tiny device - checked it out on my PC today and really impressed.
Oh and the Wi-Fi function was extremely easy to setup to transfer photos to your phone/tablet, allowing super quick upload to networking sites or to backup photos (although the latter was a little slow, given the size of the photos).
For £189 this is a fantastic buy, and far (far) surpasses the Fuji camera that it replaced. Canon all the way in future!
