Good: Great looking car, bags of room and very quiet (mines the 1.7 diesel). s
Bad: Don't get the claimed mpg, even when driving it carefully. Although fitted with a rear camera and front & rear sensors, it's a long car to get into a parking bay.
Comment: I love the car and don't regret buying it. However, having said that, there are quite a few irritations/niggles, which Hyundai could do with re-thinking.
Whilst you can dim the central control panel screen, you have only low, medium or high to choose from. On the low setting it is still too bright when on a dark road. Whilst you can switch this off, each time you make any changes to the settings (eg; turn up the heater temp, etc) the screen will light up, and you have to manually switch it off each time it happens. The electronic parking brake takes some getting use to, as does the semi- automatic hill assist brake. The statnav is not user friendly and is difficult to select the best route from the 3 choices you get. If you want to go a different route to the 3 offered, you can’t. It has often selected routes, which are not direct and will take you miles out of your way. When you switch the engine off you have only approx 5 – 10 minutes before the control panel (radio, CD player, satnav) all power down to save the battery. Not a problem, you might say but, irritating if you are parked up and want to listen to the radio, etc, whilst you are waiting for whatever reason.
The thick windscreen pillars do restrict your view and make it particularly difficult when turning a left hand bend, or junction. Before purchasing the car I was told that my iPhone 4 was fully compatible with the fully integrated hands free system. However, I found out later that this depends on which operating system you are running. Mine is still iOS 6.1.3 but, Hyundai has yet to upgrade their software beyond iOS 6.0 (as at Nov 2013). This means that any iPhone above iOS 6.0 will not be fully compatible and you will not be able to use some of the functions/features. On a positive side, the car is very comfortable and nice to drive. All the controls are light and easy to operate and the cabin noise is reasonably low. It is a large car with plenty of room for 5 people and their luggage and for long journeys it is one of the most relaxing cars I have driven. The performance for my 1.7L (136bhp) diesel is reasonably good and has sufficient low down torque to make the car responsive when accelerating through the gears and also for overtaking in top gear on motorway driving.
Good: Comfort, Boot space, Internal specification, quiet for diesel
Bad: Stop/Start mechanism (ISG) has never worked since new & 2 nos. Hyundai Garages have not been able to rectify this fault. fuel consumption around 50mpg which falls below the Hyundai's brouchure figure of around 60 mpg.
Comment: For the last 8 years I have run Hyundai cars & they have been reliable. At present my family have 2 Hyundai cars an I-20 & an I-40.
Previously, I have never had to use Hyudai's warranty until now. As already stated the Stop/Start mechanism has never worked since new. 2 nos. garages have failed to rectify this fault. As I was having no satisfaction with Hyundai UK I e-mailed their Chief Executive in Korea Mr Sabong Jang,on 2 nos occasions who failed to answer my complaint, I know that he received my e-mails as he sent a Read Receipt. I can only assume that Mr Sabong Jang does notvalue the UK market. Also Richard Hart, UK'S Area After Sales Manager, was not helpful informing me that the (I SG)on my car was operating satisfactorily
Good: Overall ownership experience, equipment levels very high, build quality, warranty, value for money
Bad: Fuel consumption way above claimed levels
Comment: After 4K miles, the car is performing very well indeed. Very comfortable and quiet on long runs. To contradict CNET review, Sat Nav excellent if slightly quirky. Dealers appear very friendly and helpful. Niggles are rock steady 42 mpg regardless of driving style when Hyundai claims 54 overall for my model (136bhp 1.7 diesel manual) , and very strong clutch action with bite point in the floor! Why does this matter? It means you have to sit jammed into the dashboard to ensure you depress the clutch sufficiently.
