Comment: I've owned many cars - Ferraris, Astons, Lambos etc etc. Although I'm nearly 67 I've never owned such a desirable car as the A1 185.My son has a new M3 and lets me drive it whenever but that stays in the garage and out comes the A1. It's true if I lived in an area where the roads had sharp fast bends this is not the best car. But as I live on the edge of a motorway and the rest of my driving is in towns and villages this is the best car you could ever choose.
Comment: I have had an A1 1.4 TFSI since April 2011. It is an automatic with 7 gears, twin clutch. I find it is often in the wrong gear labouring the engine. At 20MPH through roadworks it was in 5th labouring, I switched to sport mode and then it changed to 2nd, revving like mad, 3rd or 4th would have been much better.
I paid extra for a comfort pack (cruise control, reverse sensors, etc) I also added front parking sensors but they are not fully integrated. The rears come on automatically the front ones you have to push a button like some aftermarket add-on from Halfords, certainly not worth the extra £200.
At dusk, with the lights set to Auto there is no way of knowing if the lights are actually on, no dash indicator.
Fuel consumption is not outstanding, around town about 35MPG, 70MPH gives 40MPG but at 50MPH it gives 64MPG.
I would not buy another one.
Good: interior is a great place to be in, 122bhp gives enough real world performance
Bad: opted for dynamic suspension over sport but still too harsh on the crappy oxfordshire roads.
Comment: Had the A1 since march '11. Love nearly everything about it. We have the 122bhp petrol and economy is very good as well as having reasonably low VED (£90 per year). Interior is very plush and classy. exterior design looks very good, not too girly for a small car. On a negative side the suspension is a little hard though is handles very well. Heated mirrors are not standard. If you opt for either bose or the upgraded audi sound system you lose the ability to get extra boot space by lowering the floor. I would buy another, changing very little from the spec we have got. We have the 6 speed manual transmission which is very nice to use. 6th makes motorway driving very quite as car is at about 2,200 rpm.
