Good: No hassle analogue to DV (Firewire) conversion, DV input for PC backup, low cost

Bad: Grainy dull picture, incredibly loud noise from motor picked up on soundtrack

Comment: I bought this specifically on the recommendation of a computer magazine for the 2 likes above, ie to convert old analogue camcorder tapes to DV (worked brilliantly, no messing with codecs required) and to backup edited movie masterpices to DV tape. Cheaper, more reliable, longer lasting and higher quality than a hard disk or DVD archive.

For use as a camcorder, I'm not so sure. It's not a patch on my (9-year-old) Sony DV Handycam. Although widescreen, the picture quality is poor, but to be fair I haven't tried it on a sunny day yet (but should I need to?). The biggest problem is the noise from the tape transport. It's louder on the recorded tape than when holding it, almost to the point of spoiling the movie.
