Typical price: £260
What is it: Widescreen MiniDV camcorder with 35x optical zoom
What we think: Offers affordable, easy-to-use widescreen movie-making, though low-light performance is still subpar

We like:
New, easier-to-use menu system with joystick control; impressive colour in good lighting; widescreen LCD; built-in lens cover; low price
We don't like:
No accessory shoe or microphone input; bottom-loading tape compartment; doesn't support analogue-to-digital conversions; not enough stabilisation at full zoom; poor low-light performance
CNET UK judgement:
Canon's new MiniDV top model, the MD160, continues the company's tradition of offering affordable, easy-to-use widescreen movie-making, though low-light performance is still subpar
