Samsung BD-P4600 review

In this review

Because this player handles interactive features so well, we found ourselves more willing than usual to explore the special features found on Blu-ray. Sadly, the discs we tested don't have much extra content on them, but navigating around the online pages is quick and easy.

It's worth pointing out that the BD-P4600 doesn't assume you're on a wired, DHCP-capable network, which means you'll have to configure it before you get started. This, however, should take only a couple of button presses.

Conclusion
There's very little about the Samsung BD-P4600 that we don't love. It's fairly pricey, but we can see the cost falling steeply over the next few months. If you like the design, and want the fastest-loading stand-alone player on the market, then the BD-P4600 is likely to be of interest to you.

Alternatives include the new LG BD370, which is cheaper, also has fast load times, and adds the wonderful extra of YouTube access. We also rate the Panasonic DMP-BD35 and Sony BDP-S350 very highly, although the former is tricky to get hold of, because new players are incoming.

Good: Good looking

Bad: Noisy. Doesn't work well with DVDs.

Comment: I bought this product based on its looks and good reviews. As far as looks go it is very attractive. Its black and shiny and the blue light display on the unit with the touch screen is great. Although it does tend to collect dust so you have to keep wiping it to retain that good look.

It's very easy to set up and the menus are pretty intuitive and it has a nice controller.

Sadly, it is quite noisy, both the fan and the disk drive. Which, if you're watching something with quiet bits, can be very annoying.

It's not brilliant with DVDs and you do get a bit of stuttering.

The big problem I am having at the moment is that it will only play the first 3/4 of a DVD at which point it goes a bit crazy and the DVD drive sounds as if it's about to launch into space! It is also intermittently refusing to accept DVDs at all and just spits them back out at me.

I really can't be bothered to get Samsung to sort this out so I am going to sell it on Ebay to someone who won't be wanting to play DVDs. Sad but there you go.

I own it

Good: it looks sleek

Bad: It doesn't work

Comment: I bought this item 9 months ago and in that time they have been out to it 4 times. The syncrinisation is at fault. Samsung send a company called VSC in Manchester and they have no idea what they are doing. at the 4th attempt they took it away to sort but when I recieved it Iback cannot now get a disc into the payer. I have insisted on a replacement under the warranty but Samsung have refused. I spent £200+on this piece of kit and will never buy another Samsung product. The staff are rude and arrogant and not at all helpful they just shout down the phone and talk over you. I have gone back to the company I bought it from and they are trying to sort it but no longer stock this product. NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good: Good sleek design

Bad: Serious lip-sync problem.

Comment: DO NOT BUY ONE OF THESE ! There is a serious design problem in that the audio track lags the video track by about 0.5 seconds on some DVDs. Look upo the forum on CNET (search for Lip sync problem BDP4600). No fix provided by Samsung - apart from a firmware upgrade that doesn't fix the problem - and no confirmed date for a complete resolution. I bought ine because I thought it would have no compatibility problems with my Samsung widescreen TV, however it is unusable !
