Hello, I'm Ian Morris with cnet.co.uk and this handsome cuboid is Apple TV. A device designed to stream all of your music, video and photos from your computer to your television.
There is nothing at the front bar a status light and the remote command receiver. [show] To the rear things get a little more interesting with an Ethernet port, HDMI and component video outputs, this is rare on a media streamer and makes Apple TV interesting. There are also analogue audio and optical digital outputs. [show]
As well as the Ethernet port, Apple TV also features built in wireless networking, including support for the brand new, super-fast 802.11n. The supplied remote control is simple to use featuring just six buttons and it even looks like a tiny little iPod. [show]
The exciting part of Apple TV is using it. Fans of Apple won't be surprised to lean that the interface is clear and simple to use. If you've used an iPod, you won't struggle to understand how to navigate through the menus. [cut away to navigating through some menus]
With iTunes you can easily sync photos, music and video with Apple TV once you've paired it with iTunes by entering a code [show code menu]. If you have more computers, or a friend pops over, you can even stream music and video from their laptop.
Selecting movies will give you access to the most popular trailers [show] from Apple.com as well as any films you've bought. Although, in the UK this service hasn't launched yet, we expect them to at some point in the coming year. For the time being, the only video you can buy are music videos [show].
The music menu is simplicity itself, simply select the song or playlist you'd like to listen to, and off you go. Steaming files is also a piece of cake, simply go to the sources menu and pick the computer you would like to stream music or video from and off you go.
I'm Ian Morris for cnet.co.uk and this is Apple TV.
We like the simplicity of Apple TV and the attractive user interface. If Apple issued a software update to add support for more video formats and started selling hi-def content on iTunes, we'd snap it up in a flash. As it is, though, it has limited appeal to those that live exclusively in the Apple universe
